Carl A. Anderson is an Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutical Science at Duquesne University's School of Pharmacy. He joined the faculty in 2002 and is a founding member of the Duquesne University Center for Pharmaceutical Technology (DCPT). His research focuses on advancing process analytical technology (PAT), quality by design (QbD), and pharmaceutical manufacturing optimization. Prior to academia, he spent seven years at Aventis Pharmaceuticals, leading teams to develop PAT-based methods for the first PAT-implemented processes in the company. He currently serves on the ASTM E55 committee and previously contributed to revisions of USP standards through the NIR Validation Working Group.
Educations:
- Ph.D., Chemistry, The University of Texas at Austin, 1995
- B.S., Chemistry, California State University-Fullerton, 1990
Research Interests: Anderson’s work emphasizes bridging analytical chemistry with pharmaceutical manufacturing challenges. Key areas include PAT tool development, real-time process monitoring, and risk-based quality management systems. His team applies cutting-edge techniques like near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy and terahertz imaging to enhance understanding of drug formulation physics and chemistry.
Grants & Collaborations:
- 2015: Bristol-Myers Squibb Graduate Student Fellowship (PI)
- 2015: FDA-funded QbD process development study (Co-PI)
- 2014: NIPTE-funded training module development (Co-PI)
Labs & Teams: Leads the DCPT, a hub for pharmaceutical technology innovation, and collaborates with industry partners like Aventis and Bristol-Myers Squibb. His work integrates academic research with industrial applications, focusing on continuous manufacturing and PAT adoption.
