Carina Mónico is an Imaging Scientist and Researcher (Investigador Auxiliar) at the Technology Core Facility of CCMAR (Center for Maritime and Environmental Research) in Faro, Portugal. She holds a Biology degree from the University of Coimbra and a PhD in single-molecule biophysics from the European Laboratory of Non-Linear Spectroscopy (LENS) in Florence, Italy. Her expertise includes advanced optical microscopy, microfluidics, and biophysical techniques applied to study gene expression, membrane proteins, and toxin interactions at the single-molecule level.
Currently, she oversees the setup and management of CCMAR's Imaging Platform, providing microscopy services, training, and technical support for researchers. Her roles also include managing infrastructure services for sustainable blue economy projects and organizing educational courses in microscopy. Previously, she worked at the University of Oxford’s Micron Advanced Bioimaging Unit, where she gained experience in facility management and multidisciplinary research collaboration.
Carina’s research interests focus on bridging microscopy techniques with biological questions, emphasizing practical application and innovation in marine and environmental sciences. She actively contributes to microscopy education and community-building through workshops and training programs.
