Carey Fleiner is a Senior Lecturer in Classical and Medieval History at the University of Winchester’s History Department, part of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. She holds a Higher Education Academy Fellowship (FHEA) and has taught at institutions including the University of Delaware and the British Museum. Her roles include Programme Leader for the Classical Studies programme (2014–2019) and instructor for international teaching assistants.
Education: BA (Distinction, History) from University of Delaware (1983), MA (1991) and PhD (1996) in History from University of Virginia, plus a Certification in Museum Studies (2004). Research focuses on Imperial Rome’s societal structures, Carolingian court poetry, and intersection of music (especially the Kinks) with cultural identity. She bridges academic history with pop culture through works like A Writer’s Guide to History: The Romans and analyses of Doctor Who’s historical narratives.
Publications include monographs on Carolingian poetry and edited volumes on royal mothers and rock music history. Recent work highlights include her 2024 book on Ermoldus Nigellus and 2020 guide to Roman history. Awards include the Scouloudi Award (2020) and Medium Aevum Bursary (2020). Active in scholarly associations (Royal Historical Society, PCA/ACA), her work spans musicology, medieval literature, and interdisciplinary historical studies.
