Dr. Cara McDermott-Fasy is a Professor in the Department of Special Education at Rhode Island College. She holds a Ph.D. in Education (Curriculum and Instruction) from Boston College, alongside a Master of Arts in Teaching (Elementary and Special Education) and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, both from Rhode Island College and Boston College respectively.
Her research focuses on language-based learning differences including dyslexia, parental experiences within special education systems, multi-tiered systems of support, academic assessment and interventions, data-based individualization, and mentoring/induction practices. She has developed tools like the Rhode Island Science of Reading and Structured Literacy Syllabi Refinement Tool and Resource Bank, aiming to standardize literacy instruction across programs.
