Cara A. Finnegan is a Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Illinois, affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. She holds additional appointments in the Center for Writing Studies, Gender and Women's Studies, Art History, and the School of Art and Design. Finnegan specializes in the rhetorical history of photography and its role in public discourse and social issues.
Her education includes a Ph.D. in Communication from Northwestern University, an M.A. in Communication from the University of Maine, and a B.A. in Communication and Journalism from the University of St. Thomas, Minnesota.
Research Interests: Finnegan examines photography’s role in shaping public life through rhetorical analysis. Her work bridges communication studies, U.S. history, and visual culture, with a focus on presidential imagery, social justice visualization, and media technologies.
Publications: Recent works include Photographic Presidents: Making History from Daguerreotype to Digital (2021), which explores presidential imagery across media eras, and articles analyzing visual rhetoric’s evolution in public discourse.
