Jian Cao is the Cardiss Collins Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Northwestern University's McCormick School of Engineering, with courtesy appointments in Civil and Environmental Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and Industrial Engineering. She serves as Associate Vice President for Research and Director of the Northwestern Initiative for Manufacturing Science and Innovation (NIMSI). Her research focuses on innovative manufacturing processes, including laser additive/subtractive technologies, deformation-based methods, and machine learning integration for process optimization.
Education includes a Ph.D. and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from MIT and a B.S. in Materials Science and Automatic Control from Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
Research interests emphasize energy-efficient manufacturing, surface engineering, and distributed systems. Notable achievements include over 450 technical publications, 20 patents, and prestigious awards like the Vannevar Bush Faculty Fellowship and ASME DeVor-Kapoor Medal. She leads professional service roles, including Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Materials Processing Technology and membership in the National Academy of Engineering.
Key contributions include development of dieless sheet forming equipment, microforming systems, and AI-driven manufacturing frameworks. Her work bridges analytical methods, sensor integration, and machine learning to advance process control and material performance.
