Can Altay is an Associate Professor at the Interior Architecture Faculty of Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). He was formerly the Head of the Department of Interior Design and Department of Industrial Design at Istanbul Bilgi University, where he developed critical curricula integrating contemporary art, architecture, and urban contexts. His work explores the interplay between spatial practices and societal dynamics.
Altay's research focuses on:
- Politics of everyday life in the built environment
- Urban ecologies and public space
- Artistic interventions in spatial design
- Networked objects and collective production
His projects include open recording studios, usable sculptures, and document-based installations exhibited globally at institutions like Walker Art Center, MAXXI, and SALT, as well as biennials in Istanbul, Havana, and Gwangju.
Scientific awards:
- Graham Foundation Individual Research Grant
Altay co-authors publications with students on topics such as anonymous design and hybrid technologies. He hosts Ahali Conversations with Can Altay, a podcast examining the future of cultural production and its spatial dimensions.
