Can Akin is a Research Associate and PhD Student at the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology, University of Hamburg, working within the DFG-funded project "Return to Mexico: Migration and the pluralization of kinship." His research focuses on the intersections of return migration, social class, and place in Mexico City.
- M.A. in Social and Cultural Anthropology (major) and Philosophy (minor), Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg (2016-2021)
- B.A. in Social and Cultural Anthropology (major) and Psychology (minor), Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg (2012-2016)
His research interests include migration and return, social class, space and place, kinship and transnational relationships, urban anthropology, lifestyles and distinction, phenomenology, and regional studies of Mexico. He has presented at conferences such as the 22nd IMISCOE Annual Conference in Paris-Aubervilliers (2025), ASA2025 in Birmingham (2025), and seminars at Universidad Iberoamericana and Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.
