Cameron Cross is Assistant Professor of Middle East Studies at the University of Michigan, specializing in Persian and comparative literature of the Near East (500-1500 CE). He holds a PhD in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations from the University of Chicago (2015) and a BA from the University of Colorado (2004).
His research examines epic and romance genres across Persian, Arabic, Greek, and European traditions, analyzing themes of intertextuality, gender, and cultural transmission. Current projects investigate narrative performance, subjectivity, and the ontology of evil in Persian epic literature.
Cross also studies modern Iranian poetry, cinema, and fiction, focusing on gender representation, classical allusions, and Persian-Arabic literary intersections. His work emphasizes transcultural connections in medieval narrative traditions.
