Dr. C.J Mundy is a Professor of Biological Oceanography at the University of Manitoba's Centre for Earth Observation Science, with cross-appointments in the Department of Environment and Geography. His research examines physical/biological processes in pan-Arctic ecosystems, specializing in algal ecology, primary production, and ice-pelagic-benthic coupling. Fieldwork involves Arctic Ocean access via ice camps and the RV William Kennedy research vessel.
Research themes include:
- Algal ecology in ice-covered environments
- Radiative transfer in marine systems
- Nutrient dynamics under climate change
- Development of novel sea ice observational techniques
Recent articles demonstrate consistent focus on Arctic microbial ecology, biogeochemical cycling, and climate impacts, with particular emphasis on seasonal blooms, nutrient limitations, and ice-algae interactions. His publication trends show increasing attention to trophic dynamics and contaminant cycling in recent years.
Current graduate students include PhD candidates Fowzia Ahmed, Pascale Bouchard, and Mathilde Guillaume. Dr. Mundy teaches courses in Physical Geography, Biological Oceanography, and Arctic Sea Ice systems.
