C. Renee James is a Professor in the Department of Physics at Sam Houston State University, where she has taught since 1999. She specializes in introductory astronomy education for non-science majors and is recognized for innovative teaching that integrates history of science and public outreach.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Astronomy, University of Texas at Austin (Department of Astronomy)
Research interests center on three interconnected strands: (1) astronomy education, particularly how non-majors learn complex astronomical concepts; (2) history and philosophy of science, using historical narratives to illuminate modern scientific practice; and (3) science communication, translating cutting-edge research into accessible prose for magazines, books, and classroom materials.
Her recent scholarly output explores collaborative testing, the impact of remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, and creative assessment strategies in large-enrollment introductory courses. A consistent theme is the use of authentic astronomical data and storytelling to foster quantitative reasoning and critical thinking among students who may never take another science course.
Scientific awards and honors:
- Nominee, Sam Houston State University Excellence in Teaching Award (two occasions)
- Gold Star award, NASA IGES, for inspiring use of Hubble Space Telescope materials in education
- Popular Science Writing Award, Solar Physics Division, American Astronomical Society
Grants and collaborative initiatives:
- NASA-funded workshop (with Dr. Scott Miller and Dr. Andrea Foster, College of Education) to train secondary teachers in authentic astronomical research methods
- Biennial faculty-led study-abroad field courses to Arizona and Australia for experiential astronomy education (next offering Summer I 2014)
Dr. James regularly mentors faculty and graduate students interested in evidence-based teaching, and she is currently completing a new book on the societal payoff of seemingly impractical pure-science research.
