Bénédicte Sère is a Visiting Associate Professor at Columbia University's Department of History, specializing in medieval Christian history and theology. She holds a PhD from Université Paris Panthéon Sorbonne (2004) and completed a postdoctoral thesis at Paris Nanterre University (2015). Her research focuses on medieval intellectual life, church history, and the intersection of theology with social and political dynamics.
Key research interests include friendship in medieval thought, penitential practices, debates during the Great Schism, and polemical discourse. She has published extensively, including Penser l'amitié au Moyen Âge (2007) and L'invention de l'Eglise (2019, with an upcoming English translation by Columbia University Press).
Awarded the prestigious Istitut Universitaire de France, her teaching includes courses like HIST UN1071: History of Christianity from the Origins to the Reformation. Office hours are by appointment.
