Byeong Cheol Hwang

Byeong Cheol Hwang is a Teaching Professor of User Experience Design at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), leading the only B.F.A. in UX Design program in the U.S. since 2016. He also served as Chair of the program from 2018 to 2024. Hwang holds a Ph.D., M.S., and B.E. in Industrial Engineering from The University of Oklahoma and Soongsil University, respectively.

His expertise spans user-centered design, human factors, and mobile UX innovation. Key roles include founding Samsung’s Mobile UX Design Group (2001–2006), scaling it from 4 to over 100 designers, and later leading Samsung’s Smartphone UX Design Group during its rise to global market leadership. He also established the User Experience Design track at Samsung Art and Design Institute (2014–2015).

Research interests include advanced mobile interfaces, service design, and digital assistant technologies. Notable projects include collaborations with Ford (driverless vehicle UX), Google Maps (Android app redesign), and Gulfstream Aerospace (pilot interface systems). Awards include multiple iF Communication Design Awards, the IDEA Award, and Samsung’s Designer of the Year (2007).

Leadership experience includes roles such as Senior Director of Samsung’s Mobile UX Innovation Lab (2011–2014) and strategic UX planning roles across Samsung’s global markets. Current SCAD initiatives focus on experiential learning through industry partnerships.
