Burton W. Jones (October 11, 1902 – December 8, 1983) was a Professor of Mathematics at Cornell University (1930–1948) and later the University of Colorado Boulder (1948–1971). He chaired the mathematics department at CU Boulder from 1949 to 1963. His academic journey included earning a BA from Grinnell College (1923), MA from Harvard University (1924), and PhD from the University of Chicago (1928) under L. E. Dickson.
Research interests focused on number theory, quadratic forms, and algebra, culminating in his Carus Monograph *The Arithmetic Theory of Quadratic Forms* (1950). He advised four doctoral students at Cornell, including notable mathematicians Irma Moses Reiner and Mary Dolciani.
Recipient of the MAA Distinguished Service Award (1971), his legacy endures through the Rocky Mountain Section MAA’s B. W. Jones Distinguished Teaching Award, established posthumously in 1991.
