Burcu Gumuscu Sefunc is a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology. She holds affiliations with the Institute for Complex Molecular Systems (ICMS) and the EAISI Health group. Her research focuses on biomaterials engineering and microfluidic device design for applications in healthcare, including organ-on-chip systems and cell-biomaterial interactions. She previously served as a senior researcher at the University of Twente and conducted postdoctoral research at UC Berkeley.
- Education: PhD in Bioengineering from University of Twente (BIOS Lab-on-a-chip group)
- Academic Background: Postdoc at UC Berkeley (2017-2018), senior researcher at University of Twente
Her research interests span biomaterials fabrication, high-throughput microfluidics, and translating biological insights into clinical solutions. Recent work includes magnetic-responsive biomaterials and light-activated cell stimulation systems. Her educational contributions emphasize challenge-based learning frameworks.
Notable recognition includes the 2019 Pieter Langerhuizen grant from KHMW. She collaborates across disciplines, with projects involving vascular modeling and kidney filtration systems. Her lab (Biointerface Science group) actively develops novel platforms for biomedical applications.
