Bulent Mutus is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Windsor, Faculty of Science. His research focuses on analytical chemistry, environmental science, and biochemistry, with a strong emphasis on developing innovative sensors and materials for environmental remediation and biomedical applications.
Key areas of research include: (1) hydrogen gas sensors for green energy safety, (2) microplastics detection using conjugated polymer nanoparticles, (3) phosphate removal from water using functionalized materials like carboxymethyl cellulose-iron hydrogels, and (4) enzymology studies on proteins such as S-nitrosoglutathione reductase (GSNOR) and protein disulfide isomerase (PDI).
- Recipient of the NSERC Discovery Grant (2017) to study protein contributions to neurodegenerative diseases.
- Collaborates with researchers like Marcus Drover and Simon Rondeau-Gagné on hydrogen sensor development and microplastics research.
His work bridges fundamental chemistry with applied solutions, addressing global challenges in energy, environment, and health. Recent advancements include fluorescent probes for nitric oxide and hydrogen sulfide detection, as well as sustainable materials for water purification.
