Bulelani Jili is a Research Fellow at Harvard University as part of the Meta Research Ph.D. Fellowship. His roles include Visiting Fellow at Yale Law School, Fellow at the Atlantic Council, Cybersecurity Fellow at the Belfer Center, and researcher with Oxford University’s China, Law, Development project. He holds affiliations with institutions like IEEE Standards Association, Harvard’s COVID-19 Taskforce, and the Graduate Student Council.
Education: M.Phil from Cambridge University (Standard Bank Africa Scholar), M.A. in Economics from Peking University (Yenching Scholar), and A.B. in Philosophy, Politics & Economics from Wesleyan University (Pfeiffer Scholar).
Research focuses on Africa-China relations, cybersecurity, ICT development, and internet policy. He advises governments and organizations including the UN, US State Department, and UK FCDO. His work appears in African Affairs, Nature, and Politico.
Notable achievements include being named one of South Africa’s most influential young individuals by Mail & Guardian and receiving awards like the Wenner-Gren and Google Public Policy Fellowships.
Engagement includes roles as Resident Tutor at Harvard’s Eliot House, IEEE ethics committee member, and mentor in the Greener Scott Scholars Program. He speaks globally on digital governance and technology’s socio-political impacts.
