Bryn Hubbard is a Professor in the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences at Aberystwyth University, where he also serves as Associate Dean for Research in the Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences. He has held numerous leadership roles, including Director of the Centre for Glaciology (2009–2022) and Director of Research in his department. Hubbard earned his BA in Geography from the University of Oxford and his PhD in Glaciology from the University of Cambridge.
His research interests center on glaciology, particularly the structural and dynamic properties of glaciers and ice sheets. Key areas include subglacial hydrology, basal ice processes, debris-covered glaciers, ice shelf stability, and the application of advanced techniques such as hot-water drilling and optical televiewing (OPTV). His work extends to planetary science, with investigations into glacier-like forms on Mars. He has led or participated in approximately 100 field campaigns across Antarctica, Greenland, the Himalayas, Svalbard, and other polar and alpine regions.
His recent publications (2018–2025) reflect a strong focus on ice dynamics, hydrology, and climate impacts, utilizing borehole-based methods and remote sensing. Themes include glacier response to warming, subglacial drainage, ice deformation, and Martian glaciology. These works demonstrate sustained, high-impact research across both terrestrial and planetary cryospheres.
Among his notable recognitions is the Polar Medal (2016), awarded for outstanding contributions to polar research. He has also served in editorial leadership, including as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Geophysical Research: Earth Surface.
Hubbard has supervised eight PhD students, including K. Miles, A. Hepburn, and S. Brough. He leads major externally funded projects such as EverDrill, RESPONDER, and Losing their cool, supported by NERC, the Belgian Federal Science Policy Office, and others. His work contributes to understanding climate change impacts on ice masses and informs global sustainability goals.
He manages specialized equipment at Aberystwyth, including borehole logging winches, distributed temperature sensing systems, and hot-water ice borehole drills, supporting advanced glaciological field research.
