Prof. Bryan S. Turner is a leading sociologist of religion and a globally recognized scholar in sociological theory, human rights, and citizenship studies. He serves as Director of the Centre for Citizenship, Social Pluralism and Religious Diversity at the University of Potsdam since June 2016. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Leeds and has been awarded honorary doctorates from Flinders University (Australia) and the University of Cambridge (UK). In 2015, he received the prestigious Max Planck Research Award.
His research focuses on religion's role in contemporary Asia, the evolution of citizenship in a globalized world, and interdisciplinary studies of vulnerability and human rights. He has held academic appointments across Europe, Australia, Singapore, and the U.S.
Turner is a prolific author with over 70 books and 200 articles/chapters. Notable works include The Religious and the Political: A Comparative Sociology (2013), Religion and Modern Society (2011), and Vulnerability and Human Rights (2006). He co-edits major journals like Body & Society and Citizenship Studies.
Since 2021, he has been a Distinguished Fellow at the PM Glynn Institute, Australian Catholic University (ACU), Sydney.
