Bryan Millis is a Research Associate Professor at Vanderbilt University's School of Engineering. His work bridges cell biology and physics through advanced optical microscopy and imaging technologies. He leads the Widening The Lens Microscopy Education Program to democratize access to microscopy expertise globally. Central to his research is the BioMIID program (Biomedical Microscopy-Immersion, Innovation, and Discovery), which develops cutting-edge light sheet and oblique plane microscopes for Vanderbilt’s Cell Imaging Shared Resource. This program integrates high-speed networking, advanced storage, and software tools to address data bottlenecks in biomedical research.
Dr. Millis holds a Ph.D. in BioSciences (George Mason University), an M.S. in Biodefense, and a B.S. in Biological Sciences (Clemson University). His research extends to clinical applications, focusing on less-invasive imaging and machine learning integration for real-time diagnostics and personalized therapeutics. He emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration across departments including Cell and Developmental Biology, Physics, and Chemistry.
His initiatives aim to transform surgical and diagnostic tools using biophotonics and machine vision advancements, inspired by innovations from autonomous vehicle technology. This work seeks to enable early disease detection at cellular levels, enhancing personalized medicine.
