Bryan Holmes is an Assistant Professor at the College of Criminology & Criminal Justice at Florida State University. He holds a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from the University of Cincinnati (2022), an M.S. (2017), and a B.S. (2016) in Criminal Justice from the University of Central Florida. His research focuses on discretion, sentencing, courts, and punishment, particularly examining racial/ethnic disparities, temporal trends, and the impact of criminal history on sentencing outcomes.
Dr. Holmes has received the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences Top Honors for his book and serves on the National Policing Institute’s board of directors. He is also the editor of a leading journal in the field. His work explores how economic competition, minority threat theory, and drug epidemics influence sentencing practices across federal courts.
Recent publications highlight his analysis of opioid and methamphetamine policy impacts, legal-structural theories of sentencing consistency, and the intersection of citizenship and sentencing outcomes. His research emphasizes methodological rigor, including comparative modeling approaches for quantifying disparities.
