Bryan E. Wheeler is a Lecturer in Global Art & Visual Culture at the School of Art, Texas Tech University. His research focuses on the Interwar Period in the United States, contextualizing modernization in the American Southwest through the first half of the twentieth century within broader modernity studies. He has presented extensively on Texas and Southwest art history, New Deal art programs, and Deweyan ethics.
He holds a Ph.D. and M.F.A. from Texas Tech University and a B.F.A. from the University of Montana. As a visual artist, Wheeler explores creation myths, cycles of destruction and renewal, and post-Colonial identity in Texas, with large-scale works exhibited internationally. He collaborates with artists like Jeff Wheeler, Jack Massing, and James Surls.
His recent publication, "Boom-shacks to Brick: The New Deal Built Environment in Borger," in a forthcoming volume, reflects his interest in Depression-era built environments and federal art initiatives. Wheeler's work bridges academic research and creative practice, emphasizing interdisciplinary connections between art, history, and sociopolitical contexts.
He is also the frontman of the band Los Sonsabitches since 2001, engaging in music production and performance.
