Bruno Simoes is a Research Fellow at the School of Biological Sciences within the Faculty of Sciences, Engineering and Technology at the University of Adelaide. He holds eligibility to supervise both Masters and PhD candidates.
His research focuses on the evolution of vision in squamate reptiles, employing molecular methods to investigate visual phenotypic diversity. Under his European Union Marie Skłodowska-Curie Global Fellowship awarded in 2016, he integrates transcriptomics, comparative genomics, physiology, and anatomical approaches to study the genomic underpinnings of visual system variation in snakes and lizards.
His work examines the relative roles of adaptation and constraints in the origin of novel visual phenotypes, and investigates whether complex visual systems can be re-elaborated following evolutionary degeneration. His research spans multiple vertebrate lineages with primary emphasis on reptiles.
