Bruno Seraphin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology and Department of Social and Critical Inquiry at the University of Connecticut. He holds affiliate faculty positions in Native American and Indigenous Studies and American Studies. His research focuses on environmental and climate justice, imperialism, and Indigenous fire management practices. Seraphin earned a Ph.D. in anthropology from Cornell University in 2023, following an MA in folklore from the University of Oregon and a BFA in film from New York University.
His research examines wildfire politics in Karuk ancestral territory, settler colonialism, and collaborative filmmaking with Indigenous communities. Key projects include partnerships with the Karuk Tribe on prescribed burning advocacy and multimedia documentation of Indigenous environmental stewardship. His work critiques colonial fire management policies and highlights Indigenous sovereignty.
Scientific awards include the 2022-2023 Center for Engaged Scholarship Dissertation Fellowship and the 2021 Reppy Institute Graduate Research Fellowship. Seraphin’s publications span academic journals like Environment and Society and Security Dialogue, as well as public-facing works like the anti-ecofascist zine Against the Eco-Fascist Creep.
Teaching and outreach include syllabi on Indigenous environmental thought and advocacy through visual media. He currently holds a 2025-2026 Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship at the American Philosophical Society.
