Bruno Romeira is a Research Scientist and Principal Investigator at the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) in Portugal, leading the Nieder Research Group with expertise spanning semiconductor physics, nanophotonics, and neuromorphic computing. He coordinates major European initiatives including Horizon Europe projects and H2020-FET-OPEN grants.
His educational background includes a PhD in Physics (summa cum laude) and European PhD designation from the University of the Algarve, jointly awarded with the University of Glasgow and University of Seville. Postdoctoral training encompassed fellowships at the University of Ottawa's Microwave Photonics Research Laboratory and Eindhoven University of Technology's Institute for Photonic Integration.
Romeira's research centers on nanoscale optoelectronic devices, with emphasis on III-V semiconductors, neuromorphic hardware, and photonic integration. His work bridges fundamental physics with applications in optical communications and brain-inspired computing, particularly exploring room-temperature operation of microLEDs, resonant tunneling diodes, and nanolasers.
Recent publications reveal a convergent trend toward neuromorphic photonics, where nanoscale devices emulate neural behavior for energy-efficient information processing. Key themes include overcoming physical limits in nanoscale light sources, advanced fabrication techniques like two-photon polymerization, and integration strategies for optical interconnects.
His scientific recognition includes:
- Young Researchers Incentive Programme Award from Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (2009)
- IEEE Photonics Society Graduate Student Fellowship (2011)
- Best PhD Thesis in Optics and Photonics in Portugal (2012)
Romeira directs substantial research funding as Principal Investigator for Horizon Europe EIC projects "InsectNeuroNano" (2022-), "SPIKEPro" (2025-), and "CROSSBRAIN" (2023-), alongside coordination of H2020-FET-OPEN "ChipAI" (2019-2022) and FCT-PT "META-LED" (2023-). These initiatives address critical challenges in photonic neuromorphic systems and nanoscale optoelectronics.
He leads the Nieder Research Group at INL, which maintains advanced capabilities in nanofabrication, device characterization, and photonic integration. The group collaborates extensively across European institutions to develop next-generation technologies for computing and communications, with current focus on insect-inspired neural architectures and ultra-efficient optical interconnects.
