Bruno Fokas Sunguya is a full Professor of Public Health Nutrition and Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research and Consultancy at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) in Tanzania. He holds additional international affiliations as a Visiting Associate Professor at Kumamoto University, Japan, and as an Honorary Senior Fellow at Oxford University. His work is deeply embedded in national and global health research, particularly in Tanzania, with collaborations involving CDC, ICAP, WHO, PEPFAR, and NIH.
His research focuses on Public Health Nutrition, Maternal and Child Health, HIV/AIDS, and Non-Communicable Diseases. He has led major national surveys including a bio-behavioral study among key populations, a violence against women and girls survey, and data quality assessments for HIV programs. He is also leading capacity-building initiatives such as the EPRENUT project and the NIH-funded ENGAGE program to train Tanzanian bioethics scholars.
The recent publications reflect a strong trend in nutritional epidemiology, health disparities, and infectious disease control in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly Tanzania. His work integrates data from national surveys with policy-relevant analysis to address public health challenges.

Advising and Grants: Dr. Sunguya is the Principal Investigator (PI) for multiple large-scale grants, including PEPFAR-funded DQA projects, NORPART’s EPRENUT initiative, NORHED II capacity-building grants, and the NIH D43 ENGAGE bioethics training program. He leads national research efforts and mentors emerging scholars, contributing significantly to institutional research development at MUHAS.
Labs and Teams: He leads a multidisciplinary research team conducting national health surveys and capacity-building programs in collaboration with the National AIDS Control Program, MoH Tanzania, CDC, ICAP, and UPENN. His leadership has enabled the establishment of the MSc Nutritional Epidemiology program in Tanzania, signifying a major institutional advancement.
