Bruce Z. Gao is a Professor and the South Carolina SmartState Endowed Chair in Biofabrication Engineering at Clemson University's Department of Bioengineering. His primary affiliations include the College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Miami (1999). His research focuses on optical imaging, microfabrication, and cell-ECM interactions, with applications in biophotonics and engineered microenvironments.
- Education: Ph.D. Biomedical Engineering, University of Miami, 1999
Research Highlights:
- Biophotonics Lab: Develops coherence-based imaging (OCT, digital holography), nonlinear optics, and laser tweezers for cell manipulation.
- Microfabrication: Creates lab-on-a-chip systems, microfluidics-based cell sorting, and engineered microenvironments for studying cell development and interactions.
- Cell-ECM Interactions: Investigates cardiac cell electrical-mechanical coupling and neural guidance in microfabricated environments.
Recognition:
- Recipient of the SmartState Endowed Chair in Biofabrication Engineering
Lab & Teams: Directs the Biophotonics Lab, which integrates advanced imaging and microfabrication technologies to study cell behavior in controlled environments. Collaborates on projects involving stem cell development, cancer-cell microniche engineering, and tissue-culture models.
