Bruce Wightman is Professor and Department Chair of Biology. He holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University and a B.A. from Oberlin College. His teaching philosophy emphasizes biology as a language requiring mastery of foundational concepts to enable critical thinking, alongside interests in science epistemology's societal impact.
His research focuses on molecular genetics in Caenorhabditis elegans, investigating nuclear receptor genes (e.g., fax-1, nhr-67) and their roles in insulin signaling, sleep regulation, and developmental processes. The Wightman Research Lab actively mentors undergraduates in these areas.
Recent publications (2008–2018) cluster in genetics and developmental biology, with themes including nuclear receptor evolution, tissue-specific gene expression in C. elegans, and biology pedagogy. Award highlights:
- Williams Award for Scholarship
- Hoffman Award for Research
- Bridge Builder Award
He advises over 20 students in projects spanning genetics, neurobiology, and developmental arrest mechanisms. Current courses include Biochemistry, Genetics, Developmental Biology, and specialized research topics.
