Bruce Walker serves as Professor of the Practice and Director of the Ragon Institute of Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), MIT, and Harvard. He is also a Core Member of the Ragon Institute, Co-Leader of the Massachusetts Consortium on Pathogen Readiness (MassCPR), and an Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. His academic career spans multiple prestigious institutions with significant leadership roles in immunological research.
Dr. Walker received his BS in chemistry in 1980 from the University of Colorado, Boulder, with additional studies at the Swiss Federal Technical Institute (ETH). He earned his MD from Case Western Reserve University and completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at MGH and Harvard Medical School, followed by fellowship training in infectious disease at the same institutions. He is board-certified in both internal medicine and infectious disease.
Dr. Walker's research program focuses on cellular immune responses in chronic human viral infections, with particular emphasis on HIV immunology and vaccine development. His laboratory investigates the interplay of immunologic, virologic, and host genetic factors that determine control of human viral infections. A significant portion of his work examines elite controllers—individuals who can suppress HIV to undetectable levels without antiretroviral therapy—to identify mechanisms of natural immune control. His research spans HIV reservoir dynamics, T cell functionality, immune exhaustion mechanisms, and structural aspects of viral immunology that inform vaccine design.
His recent publications through 2025 demonstrate continued leadership in HIV research, with particular focus on viral reservoir characteristics across different patient populations, mechanisms of immune control, and T cell responses to HIV infection. While HIV remains his primary focus, his work extends to related areas including marine microbiology and medical education, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of modern biomedical research.

As Director of the Ragon Institute, Dr. Walker leads a multidisciplinary research enterprise that brings together scientists from MGH, MIT, and Harvard to address fundamental questions in immunology. His laboratory investigates blood samples from persons with chronic HIV infection as well as elite controllers, working to translate basic immunological findings into clinical applications for HIV treatment and prevention. The Walker Lab includes postdoctoral researchers, research technicians, data analysts, and students collaborating on various aspects of HIV immunology, with current research directions focused on understanding natural immune control mechanisms and developing strategies to enhance immune responses against HIV.
