Professor Bruce Smith is a distinguished faculty member in the English Department at Syracuse University's College of Arts & Sciences. He holds a BA from Bucknell University (1971) and an MA from Columbia University (1975). His academic career includes teaching at Tufts, Harvard, Portland State, and the University of Alabama before joining Syracuse in 2002. Smith's research focuses on Poetry and Poetics, with particular emphasis on Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman. His work has been published in prestigious journals like The New Yorker and Harvard Review.
Notable awards include the Guggenheim Fellowship (2000), National Book Critics Circle Award nomination (2011), and William Carlos Williams Award (2011). He has served as a visiting professor at University of Houston and Columbia University, and was a resident at the American Academy in Rome (2016).
Recent teaching roles include courses on poetry workshops and literary interpretation. His creative works explore themes of American identity, history, and social dynamics, with seven published poetry collections, including Spill (2019) and Devotions (2011).
