Bruce Rittmann is a Regents' Professor of Environmental Engineering and Director of the Biodesign Swette Center for Environmental Biotechnology at Arizona State University. He is also affiliated with the Water Institute and recognized as a Distinguished Global Futures Scientist.

Dr. Rittmann's research centers on managing microbial communities to provide societal services, including water and soil remediation, renewable energy generation, and improving human health. His work bridges environmental biotechnology, microbial ecology, and sustainable engineering.
With over 850 publications and an h-index > 120, his scholarship focuses on microbial processes for environmental sustainability. He has also authored 21 patents and co-written the textbook Environmental Biotechnology: Principles and Applications (McGraw-Hill).
