Bruce Mazer, MD is a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at McGill University's Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. He serves as a Senior Scientist at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) at the Glen site and is the Division Head of Allergy and Immunology at the Montreal Children's Hospital. His research is conducted at the Meakins-Christie Laboratories where he leads investigations into allergic diseases and immune mechanisms.
Dr. Mazer's research interests focus on B-lymphocytes, immunoglobulins, innate immunity, and the cytokine network. His laboratory investigates IL-13 and IL-13 receptors in allergic inflammation, intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) mechanisms, Toll-like receptor 4 expression in pediatric populations, and Chronic Beryllium Disease. His work combines human studies with animal modeling to develop new approaches for modifying immune responses to allergens and promoting natural immune tolerance in individuals with allergies and asthma. His research has significant implications as asthma and food allergies affect nearly 20% of children in North America, representing major causes of morbidity and substantial economic and social impact.
Analysis of Dr. Mazer's recent publications reveals a strong focus on food allergy treatments (particularly milk and peanut), oral immunotherapy protocols, AI applications in allergy management, and immune response to SARS-CoV-2. His work spans basic immunological mechanisms through to clinical applications, with particular emphasis on improving patient outcomes through innovative therapeutic approaches and better understanding of immune regulation.
- 2023 Bram Rose Award for Contribution to the Practice of Allergy in Quebec
Dr. Mazer has secured significant research funding including CIHR Project Grants and has been involved in major collaborative initiatives like ALLERGEN-National Center of Excellence. His laboratory has produced numerous high-impact publications in top immunology and allergy journals. He leads the Respiratory Diseases Program at the Centre for Translational Biology and collaborates extensively with researchers across McGill University and the RI-MUHC. His recent work includes investigations into ChatGPT's potential for supporting parents in food allergy treatment and studies showing that over 75% of Canadians had SARS-CoV-2 immunity through infection by March 2023.
