Bruce Macintosh is an Adjunct Professor of Physics at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC), where he serves as Director of the University of California Observatories. He maintains a 0% appointment at Stanford University and holds roles such as Deputy Director of the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology (KIPAC). His primary affiliations include UCSC and KIPAC, with significant contributions to both research and institutional leadership.
- Education:
- B.Sc. in Physics from Trinity College, University of Toronto, Canada (1988)
- Ph.D. in Astronomy from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) (1994)
Professor Macintosh’s research focuses on extrasolar planets, particularly their direct imaging using advanced adaptive optics systems to suppress starlight interference. He leads the Gemini Planet Imager project—a cutting-edge adaptive optics instrument for the Gemini South telescope—and chairs the Science Investigation Team for the coronagraph instrument on NASA’s Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) mission, advancing planetary imaging and spectroscopy. He is deeply committed to fostering inclusivity in science, currently chairing the Physics Department’s Equity and Inclusion Committee at Stanford and contributing to science policy initiatives, including the Astronomy and Astrophysics 2020 Decadal Survey.
His advisory and grant leadership includes directing the UC Observatories and overseeing major projects like Gemini and WFIRST. He collaborates extensively through roles at KIPAC and contributes to both observational astronomy and institutional equity efforts.
Professor Macintosh’s work is anchored in astrophysical instrumentation and exoplanetary science, alongside advocacy for diversity and accessibility in academia. His email is bmacintosh@stanford.edu.
