Bruce Lanphear is a Professor at Simon Fraser University's Faculty of Health Sciences. His research focuses on fetal and childhood environmental exposures to neurotoxins (lead, mercury, pesticides, tobacco smoke), residential hazards, and their impacts on neurodevelopment, respiratory health, and growth. He directs longitudinal cohort studies examining developmental trajectories from prenatal exposure to adolescent outcomes.
His work emphasizes environmental epidemiology methods, particularly community-based trials for lead poisoning prevention, asthma epidemiology, and tobacco exposure reduction. Current projects investigate endocrine disruptors, chemical mixtures, and social determinants of health disparities using advanced biostatistical approaches.
Publications consistently address developmental neurotoxicity, endocrine disruption, and health disparities. Recent studies leverage large birth cohorts (MIREC, HOME) to analyze chemical impacts on neurodevelopment, cardiometabolic health, and growth trajectories. Methodological innovations include epigenetic aging biomarkers and mixture exposure modeling.
Dr. Lanphear holds an MD from University of Missouri and MPH from Tulane. He serves on national committees including the National Children's Study Steering Committee and Richmond Center of Excellence Advisory Committee.
