Bruce Hardy is Professor of Anthropology at Kenyon College, where he has been faculty since 2004. His research focuses on Paleolithic archaeology, Neanderthal behavior, and human evolution, with extensive fieldwork across Europe and Africa. Professor Hardy's work has provided groundbreaking evidence on Neanderthal technology, including the earliest known fiber technology dating back 50,000 years.
Educational background includes a PhD from Indiana University Bloomington (1994), MA from Indiana University Bloomington (1991), and BA from Emory University (1988).
Research interests center on reconstructing Paleolithic lifeways through multidisciplinary approaches. Current investigations examine:
- Neanderthal subsistence strategies and dietary adaptations
- Cognitive implications of Paleolithic technology
- Site formation processes in karst environments
- Human-environment interactions during the Pleistocene
Publication analysis reveals strong focus on lithic technology, taphonomy, and site occupation patterns, with recent work emphasizing experimental approaches to artifact function. Research consistently integrates zooarchaeology, geoarchaeology, and microscopic analysis to reconstruct behavioral patterns.
Honors include the John B. McCoy-Banc One Distinguished Teaching Chair recognizing pedagogical excellence. Professor Hardy mentors students through field research opportunities at Paleolithic sites and laboratory analysis.
