Bruce Allen is a Director at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute) in Hannover since 2007. He also holds the position of Adjunct Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Honorary Professor at Leibniz University Hannover.
His educational background includes a Bachelor's degree in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1980) and a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge (1984). His doctoral advisor was Stephen Hawking.
- Bachelor of Science in Physics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1980 (Advisor: Rainer Weiss)
- Doctor of Philosophy, University of Cambridge, 1984 (Advisor: Stephen Hawking)
Dr. Allen's research focuses on the direct, observable consequences of general relativity, particularly the search for and analysis of gravitational-wave signals using laser interferometers and pulsar timing arrays. He is also the principal investigator for the Einstein@Home project, a distributed computing initiative that analyzes data from gravitational-wave detectors, radio telescopes, and gamma-ray telescopes to detect signals from rotating neutron stars.
His notable awards include:
- Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award (2001)
- Lower Saxony State Prize (2016)
- Special Breakthrough Prize (2016)
- Gruber Prize for Cosmology (2016)
As the leader of the Einstein@Home project, Dr. Allen oversees a global volunteer computing effort that has made significant contributions to the field of gravitational-wave astronomy and the study of neutron stars.
