Bruce A. Wasserman is Professor and Vice Chair of Clinical Research at the University of Maryland School of Medicine's Department of Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, with secondary appointments in Neurosurgery and Surgery. He holds an MD in Neuroradiology from Johns Hopkins University, complemented by a BS in Biomedical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. His clinical training includes an Internal Medicine internship at University of Rochester, residency at Harvard Medical School's Mount Auburn Hospital, and fellowship at Johns Hopkins.
Dr. Wasserman's research focuses on advanced neurovascular imaging, particularly MRI techniques for characterizing atherosclerosis pathophysiology and stroke risk. He investigates carotid/intracranial plaque development, hemodynamic patterns influencing cardiovascular events, and cerebral microcirculatory physiology. His work establishes imaging biomarkers for predicting cardiovascular outcomes.
Since 2002, he has maintained continuous NIH funding as Principal Investigator for landmark multi-institutional studies: MESA (carotid MRI), ARIC (Intracranial Atherosclerosis/Cognitive Impairment), VALIDATE (vascular aging), and Baltimore Longitudinal Study extensions. As founding Chair of the ASNR Vessel Wall Imaging Study Group, he coordinates global educational webinars and research collaborations.
