Brooke Witherow is an Assistant Professor of Communication Arts in the Department of English & Communication Arts at Hood College, where she has taught since joining the institution in 2019. Her academic appointment focuses on undergraduate education in communication disciplines.
Her educational qualifications include:
- Ph.D. from University of Maryland, College Park
- M.A. from Duquesne University
- B.S. from Stevenson University
Witherow's research centers on crisis communication, community building, and police communication, informed by her practical experience as a beach patrol lifeguard where she observed emergency communication dynamics. Prior to Hood College, she served as a trainer for the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism’s (START) Training in Risk and Crisis Communication (TRACC) program and taught at University of Maryland, Stevenson University, and Carroll Community College.
She emphasizes experiential learning through hands-on public relations projects including real-client campaigns, crisis simulations, and industry certifications in Google Analytics and Hootsuite. Her teaching philosophy connects communication theory to life-saving applications in community resilience.
Witherow maintains active office hours in Rosenstock Hall, Room 210, and balances academic work with creative pursuits including stained glass art, painting, and outdoor activities.
