Brigid C. Flynn

Dr. Brigid C. Flynn serves as Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at the University of Kansas Medical Center within the School of Medicine, holding key leadership positions including Chief of the Division of Critical Care, Co-Director of the Cardiothoracic Surgical Intensive Care Unit, and Director of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation. She also directs the CTICU Anesthesiology Resident rotation and participates in critical hospital committees such as the Critical Care Committee and COVID-19 Surge Planning Committee.

Her academic journey began with a BA in Pre-medicine from Kansas State University, followed by an MD from the University of Kansas Medical Center. She completed her Anesthesiology residency at the University of Virginia and Critical Care Fellowship at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, with prior faculty roles at Mount Sinai Medical Center and Columbia University before returning to KUMC in 2014.

Dr. Flynn's research program spans cardiothoracic critical care, hemodynamic monitoring, and ECMO applications, with current investigations including Recombinant Factor VIIa for cardiac surgical bleeding, Pulmonary artery pressure index for predicting organ failure, sexual harassment in medicine, and noninvasive hemodynamic monitoring validation. She founded the Critical Care Anesthesiology Research Enhancing for ICU (CARE-ICU) group and secured K-INBRE funding for cardiovascular biomarker studies, emphasizing translational research bridging clinical practice and education.

As an educator, Dr. Flynn mentors medical students and residents while co-founding the institution-wide Critical Care Grand Rounds series. She serves on the Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia editorial board, reviews for major anesthesia societies, and holds national leadership as an elected Board Director of the Society of Critical Care Anesthesiology.
