Dr. Bridget Backhaus is a Senior Lecturer and DECRA Fellow at Griffith University's School of Humanities, Languages and Social Science, affiliated with the Griffith Centre for Social and Cultural Research. She holds a PhD from Loughborough University, a Master of Creative Industries and Bachelor of Journalism (Honours) from Queensland University of Technology, and a Graduate Certificate in University Learning & Teaching from Griffith University.
Her research explores the intersections of community media, social change, and environmental communication, with emphases on:
- Voice, listening, and identity in community radio
- Climate change communication and local resilience
- Media diversity and Indigenous representation
- Participatory methodologies and media ethics
Her recent publications (2022-2025) demonstrate strong thematic coherence around community media's role in democratizing communication, with emphasis on Australian contexts, climate narratives, journalism pedagogy, and decolonial approaches.

Grants & Supervision: She leads multiple projects including an ARC DECRA grant on community radio as a model organization ($476K) and supervises doctoral candidates researching climate communication, local media, and community identity. Current students include Nat Kassel (Principal Supervisor) and three others as Associate Supervisor.
As WIL Coordinator and former Deputy HDR Convenor, she develops industry-academia partnerships and oversees the Griffith Centre for Social and Cultural Research's doctoral training initiatives.
