Brid Phillips

Bríd Phillips is a Senior Lecturer (Nursing) in the School of Allied Health at The University of Western Australia (UWA), with an Honorary Research Fellow appointment in the School of Humanities. She holds a PhD in English and Cultural Studies (UWA, 2017), an MA in Medieval and Early Modern Studies (UWA, 2012), and a BA in English and Classics (UWA, 2010). With an extensive background in emergency nursing, her research integrates clinical practice with humanities, focusing on simulation, Shakespearean studies (especially the history of emotions), narrative medicine, and health/medical humanities linked to cardiology.

Her current projects include The Heart of the Matter Health Humanities project, exploring literature in health and wellbeing through staged readings as educational tools. Key research themes span interdisciplinary topics like the intersection of Shakespearean discourse and modern medical conditions (e.g., Takotsubo syndrome), environmental impacts of healthcare practices, and global health equity.

Phillips has received awards including the ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions PhD Top-up Scholarship (2014) and the Rose and Cecil Owen Bequest Prize in Classics and Ancient History (2009). She co-leads grants such as the WUN Health Humanities initiative (2020–2021) and contributes to UWA’s health research profile through projects like Communicating Good Health and Wellbeing (2019).

Her teaching and research emphasize empathy, interdisciplinary collaboration, and innovative educational methods—such as remote teaching strategies and participatory frameworks like InspirE5 for health humanities curricula. Phillips actively engages in public lectures, podcasts (e.g., The Heart of the Matter Podcast Series), and peer review for journals like Medical Humanities.
