Brian Whitmore is an Assistant Professor of Practice at The University of Texas at Arlington’s McDowell Center for Global Studies and a Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center. His expertise spans Russian and post-Soviet politics, foreign policy, and security. Whitmore previously served as a Senior Russia Analyst for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (2007–2018) and worked as a foreign correspondent for The Boston Globe. He holds an MA in Political Science from Villanova University (1987) and a BA in Politics from Saint Joseph’s University (1986).
His research focuses on Russian authoritarianism, Ukraine’s resilience in the face of Russian aggression, and transatlantic security dynamics. Whitmore is the founder of The Power Vertical Blog and host of its podcast, analyzing Russian affairs. He frequently testifies before U.S. government bodies, including the Helsinki Commission, and advises NATO and European institutions.
Whitmore’s recent articles explore themes like Russia’s geopolitical alliances, cyber warfare strategies, and the human cost of the Ukraine conflict. His teaching at UTA includes courses on Russian foreign policy, post-Soviet political systems, and Ukrainian history. He actively engages with media, appearing on CNN, BBC, and NPR to contextualize Eurasian developments.
