Brian Turnbull is an Associate Professor of Instruction in the Department of Sociology at the University of South Florida's Sarasota-Manatee campus. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Kansas (2018), an M.A. in Security Studies from Georgetown University (2011), and a B.A. from the University of Kansas (2009). His research focuses on gender quotas in the global South, particularly India, exploring how patriarchal norms undermine women’s substantive representation despite electoral reservations. He is currently revising a book manuscript, Women Who Only Serve Chai: Gender Reservations and Autonomy in India, based on Fulbright-funded fieldwork in Jaipur. His work bridges political sociology, qualitative methodology, and South Asian politics, appearing in journals like Politics and Gender and Qualitative Research.
Teaching emphasizes critical thinking and experiential learning, including a service-learning study abroad program in Mysore, India, focusing on gendered sustainability. Courses include American Government, Comparative Politics, and ISS Internships. He was nominated for the USFSM Teacher of the Year in 2020. His interdisciplinary approach integrates democratic representation, ethnic conflict, and global human rights into curricula.
