Dr. Brian Thom is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Victoria. As Chair and UVic’s Provost’s Engaged Scholar, his work focuses on Indigenous legal orders, land rights, and ethnographic mapping, conducted in collaboration with Coast Salish communities. His scholarship bridges cultural anthropology, archaeology, and policy research to advance Indigenous self-determination and reconciliation.

He supervises graduate students in topics ranging from cultural heritage to climate policy, and co-leads the Ethnographic Mapping Lab at UVic. His work with the SSHRC-funded Balance Co-Lab and Solving-FCB project addresses Indigenous sustainability and food security frameworks.
