Brian T. Vivier is the Director of the Center for Global Collections at the University of Pennsylvania Libraries and affiliated with the School of Arts & Sciences and the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations (EALC). He teaches graduate seminars in Chinese history and plays a key role in developing global collections and advancing area studies at Penn.
His research focuses on Chinese history from the 10th to 13th centuries, particularly the Liao, Song, and Jin dynasties. His current work analyzes the information order through textual study of official histories, alongside interests in Song dynasty foreign trade and the economic and frontier history of pre-modern China. He actively mentors graduate students and serves on dissertation committees in EALC and related fields.
Brian T. Vivier has received significant recognition for his scholarship, including:
- Fulbright U.S. Senior Scholar (Taiwan)
- Research support from the Social Sciences Research Council
He holds key editorial and advisory roles, such as Book Review Editor for the Journal of Song-Yuan Studies, member of the advisory board for the Bibliography of Asian Studies, and Chair of the Center for Research Libraries International Collections and Content Group. At Penn, he represents the Libraries on the International Liaisons Group. His work bridges academic research, library science, and global scholarly collaboration.
