Brian Sturm is a full-time Professor at the School of Information and Library Science (UNC Chapel Hill), specializing in storytelling and folklore, children's/youth literature, immersion in information environments, and bibliotherapy. He is open to advising doctoral students and actively contributes to LIS research and pedagogy.

His research examines the psychological state of immersion in stories, books, and digital media, emphasizing its applications in public libraries and education. He explores how holistic library environments—physical spaces, rules, and human interactions—shape user experiences, particularly for children.
Dr. Sturm’s recent publications focus on storytelling in LIS, youth librarian education, and cross-cultural analyses of library perceptions. His work bridges folklore studies, pedagogy, and information science, with an emphasis on qualitative methodologies.

Previously a natural history museum docent, planetarium host, wildlife rehabilitator, and outdoor educator, Sturm has been a professional storyteller for over 30 years. He teaches courses in public library services for children, youth literature, and storytelling techniques.
