Brian Smith is an Associate Professor at the Brian Lamb School of Communication, Purdue University, holding this position since his promotion in 2018 after joining the faculty in 2012. He teaches core courses in public relations, integrated communication, crisis communication, global communication, and digital communication management.
His educational background includes a Ph.D. in communication from the University of Maryland, a master’s degree in international relations, and a bachelor’s in humanities/English from Brigham Young University.
Smith’s research examines how digital and social media transform organization-public relationships, focusing on stakeholder engagement measurement and integrated communication (iComm) structures. His work bridges theoretical frameworks with marketplace applications in public relations evolution.
He received the Institute for Public Relations Ketchum Excellence in PR Award in 2008 for contributions to public relations measurement methodology.
Smith actively develops academic programs including coursework for Purdue’s Online Strategic Communication Master’s Program and leads the "Boiler Up Barcelona!" summer study abroad initiative in Spain.
