Brian Silverstein is a Professor of Anthropology at the University of Arizona's School of Anthropology. His work focuses on Turkey, exploring intersections of culture, technology, quantification, and political ecology. He leads a project on olive oil production's socio-technical dynamics in Turkey’s Ayvalik and Akhisar regions. His research also examines statistical reforms in Turkey, linking them to agricultural policy and EU integration. Silverstein’s earlier studies include religion in Turkey, analyzing how Islam became a privatized faith through modernization processes.
His research interests span culture-technology interfaces, institutional reform, food systems, and social/political theory. Courses taught include Modernity, Religion and Secularism, and Globalization studies. His work bridges ethnography with historical analysis, emphasizing how knowledge systems shape power and everyday life.
Notable contributions include The Social Lives of Numbers (2020) and Islam and Modernity in Turkey (2011). His recent articles (2023-2024) analyze olive oil’s economic and qualitative dimensions in Turkey. Grants and institutional affiliations are tied to the School of Anthropology's core faculty role.
