Brian Rice, PhD, is a Professor in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management at the University of Manitoba. He holds a unique academic background as a graduate of the world’s first all-Indigenous doctoral program, The Traditional Knowledge Program. His research focuses on Indigenous perspectives in healing, wellness, and global Indigenous advocacy, informed by extensive fieldwork, including a 700-mile walk across Rotinonshonni territory. He has taught for over 30 years across disciplines like Criminal Justice, International Development, and Native Studies, emphasizing Indigenous content.
- Education: PhD from The Traditional Knowledge Program
His research spans Indigenous histories, reconciliation, and land-based education. Recent work includes collaborations in Japan and Kenya to document elders’ knowledge. He has published widely, including peer-reviewed books and chapters, and contributed to national projects like the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of Canada. He has served on six doctoral and two master’s committees and co-founded the Masters Program in Peace and Conflict Studies. His media engagements include APTN and CBC Indigenous radio, and he was invited to President Obama’s event for the MacArthur Foundation.
Grants include a Manitoba Health and Safety grant for workplace safety initiatives in Indigenous communities. He advocates globally, having presented in over 15 countries and co-developed educational programs at the University of Manitoba.
