Brian Pavilonis

Brian Pavilonis is an Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental, Occupational, and Geospatial Health Sciences at the City University of New York (CUNY) School of Public Health. He is a Certified Industrial Hygienist with expertise in exposure science and occupational health, having worked in the field since 2012. He serves as Program Director of the NY/NJ NIOSH ERC Industrial Hygiene Program, overseeing significant enrollment growth and ABET reaccreditation. His research focuses on environmental pollutant exposure in disadvantaged communities and workers, including studies in Bolivian mining regions and New York City nail salons.

Education:

• PhD in Occupational and Environmental Health from University of Iowa
• MPH in Environmental Health from University of Illinois at Springfield
• BS in Chemical Environmental Science from University of Iowa

Research Interests: Exposure science, risk assessment, and industrial hygiene with an emphasis on occupational health disparities and urban environmental justice. His work integrates quantitative exposure assessment with community engagement to address health inequities.

Grants & Programs:

• Recipient of a New York Community Trust grant to support scholarships for women and minority students in industrial hygiene programs
• Principal faculty for ABET reaccreditation achieving zero deficiencies
• Directed a program that increased enrollment by 150% (6 to 16 students) since 2016

Labs & Collaborations: Leads the NY/NJ NIOSH ERC Industrial Hygiene Program and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams on projects ranging from low-cost air quality monitoring to climate change communication strategies.
